Beauty with a Purpose
2006-08-31As you know, charity has a somewhat tarnished reputation in Singapore at the moment, due to the fact that one of the largest charities has been very publicly exposed, for a number of wrongdoings.
Because of this I found it very difficult to find enthusiasm for my ideas around charity events. Previously I have volunteered my time through my business, The Cupcake Boutique to a personal favourite charity of mine ASD (Association of Singapore Dogs). But this time I was drawing a blank.
So I decided to take the matter firmly into my own hands, and instead of simply lending my name and title to a cause, I'd do everything myself, and organize my charity event. First I found the perfect venue for my charity fashion show, Q Bar on the Boat Quay at the old parliament house. I secured the date and then approached the charity of my choice, The Singapore Children's Society.
I called all of my model friends and had ten agree to partake in my show. I then persuaded a well known choreographer, Nixem, one of Singapore's leading hairstylists, Anthony, and a make-up sponsor Make up Forever. Two local fashion houses agreed to let me use their gowns, Irene's Creations and Perfect in Black. Then I needed sponsors for the evening, first I called The Singapore Shawl, and not only did they give me a piece for the event, they have also given me a shawl for the Miss World Children's Charity Auction.
I then called Fiji Water and they were happy to help. A photographer I knew named Thomas also agreed to take and print that night photographs of the guests. I then produced my own invitations and had a banner made. I emailed everyone I knew and ended up with nearly 90 guests and media, including a TV crew from MTV and two local magazines! We held a lucky drawer and had prizes donated by Oohtique, Prestat chocolates, Irene's Creations, Perfumes, The Singapore Shawl and some of my very own spa products.
The evening went well, but more importantly I learned a lot. As I made my welcome speech I indicated that this would be the first of many events, and I know that the next one will be better. In the end we raised over $5000, I now know I have sponsors and people to support my next event!
